Dear film interested,
We have an ambitious schedule planned for the next 4 months: Asian films about robots, A White Trash weekend complete with a white trash meal (and a shot of Jack Daniels), a mini-fest celebrating the pioneers of electronic music, a movie-poster sale day, a slate of the most extreme Midnight Movies ever and a tribute to good films starring very bad women among many other things.
But for the moment the focus is on the upcoming weekend where we replay for one last time a 'strangest hits' selection of the "Environmental disaster films" we ran during COP-15.
The ticket price: 50kr (good for the whole weekend.)

19.00: DAY OF THE ANIMALS
21.00: FOOD OF THE GODS
SUNDAY (10.01.10)

FEMMES FROM THE DARKSIDE:

GOOD MOVIES WITH BAD WOMEN

On his posters for the re-release of FASTER, PUSSYCAT! KILL! KILL! Russ Meyer claimed the film was a tribute to “the violence in women.” This coming weekend, starting on Friday night, Husets Biograf goes one step further and celebrates the evil in women.

For decades female characters in the movies tended to be either all nurturing or all suffering, but there were a few movies that shattered the mould and depicted female characters that could be just as bad as their male counterparts. From Jan 15 to 17 Husets Biograph is proud to screen 4 of them – THE BAD SEED, DETOUR, KITTEN WITH A WHIP and FOXY BROWN. Thrill to female leads who victimize and physically & mentally abuse good trusting men. By turns chillingly steely-eyed and explosively sexual, they wreck havoc with the paternalistic power structures and claim the right to be just plain bad. What took ‘em so long?!

In 1945 Ann Savage jolted audiences with her anger and defiance as the sultry sadist in DETOUR … in 1956 Patty McCormick shocked viewers (and won the heart of John Waters) with her performance in THE BAD SEED. Could such a sweet little girl really be a …serial murderer?!! In 1964 it was Ann-Margret’s turn to torment a man just for the sheer fun of it in KITTEN WITH A WHIP where this wild beatnik girl-of-the-road kidnaps a married politician. And in 1974 it was Pam Grier’s turn to rebel against the gender and racial power structures in the blaxploitation classic FOXY BROWN.

Friday: 15.01:

19.00 = DETOUR

20.30 = KITTEN WITH A WHIP

Saturday: 16.01.

18.30 = THE BAD SEED

21.00 = FOXY BROWN

Sunday: 17.01

17.00 = FOXY BROWN

19.30 = KITTEN WITH A WHIP

TICKET PRICES: 50 kr. per night (2 FILMS) or 100 kr. for all weekend

Husets Biograf celebrates the 70th birthday of American horror director George Romero with a tribute to the concept of the late great “midnight movie” which his film, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, did so much to establish. The Midnight Movie craze went on to give life to the most bizarre and far-out films ever made, and in the spirit of all that is tawdry, shocking, violent, bizarre and sensational we bring a selection of classic “midnight movies” back to life at Husets Bio. Each night starts with a screening of the great 2005 documentary, MIDNIGHT MOVIES, FROM THE MARGIN TO THE MAINSTREAM in which John Waters, George Romero, Alexandro Jodorowsky & others explain the phenomenon & show clips from El TOPO, PINK FLAMINGOS, etc. All films are shown in 16mm & 35mm prints and tickets are dirt cheap at 50kr per night! (come & go as you please)

HUSETS BIOGRAF’S BIRTHDAY WEEKEND

At a time when it is more difficult than ever for small art cinemas to survive, Husets Biograf - the oldest specialty art cinema in Copenhagen – is still going strong and celebrates its 37th birthday over the weekend of Feb. 12-14 with a variety of treats for its faithful fans. There will be 10 different movies, free prize giveaways and on Sunday a poster sale and free coffee to go along with our film noir mini-festival. Tickets for each night are a paltry 50kr, or all three nights (10 films!) for a mere 100kr. 10kr. per film! Our schedule:

FEB 12th - FRIDAY
“CULT FILM CLASSICS”
19:00 FEMALE TROUBLE by John Waters,1974, 92 minutes. Waters’ most outrageous, inventive and hilarious film has rarely been screened in Denmark. Considered by many in the know to be his greatest achievement, a truly bent masterpiece full of the raw energy, the unhinged performances and the insane dialogue that typified his 70s filmmaking at its despicable best… and Divine was never better. Shown in a 35mm print with German subtitles.
21:00 CLOCKWORK ORANGE, 1971, 2 hours & 16 minutes., D: Stanley Kubrick. Without a doubt Kubrick’s most controversial and notorious film – and clearly his best. This tale of gang brutality, ultra-violence and mod fashion excess in a lawless future London became a cultural icon and not just a film. It clearly needs no introduction. Experience the radical moog soundtrack and Beethoven’s 9th again on our new sound system and re-experience all your favorite scenes on the big screen. If ever a film was conceived as a group experience, this was it. Shown on a good 35mm print, no subtitles.
23:30 DEEP THROAT, 1972, 61 minutes. This is authentic movie history, the original Linda Lovelace classic brought to you totally uncut, totally XXX-rated and shown on a good 35mm print, no subtitles

FEB. 13th – SATURDAY:
“A NIGHT OF PSYCHEDELIC INDULGENCE…”
19.00 – JIMI PLAYS MONTEREY: 1986 / D: D.A. Pennebaker / 50min. This well made documentary about Jimi Hendrix is narrated by John Phillips and features appearances by Jagger, Joplin and all four of The Beatles among other musical celebrities, as well as lavish concert footage of Jimi performing at the legendary 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. Shown on a good 35mm print.
20.00 – MEET ME IN WICHITA, 7 min., 2006, short film by Martha Colburn
20.10 – ALTERED STATES, 102 min, 1980, D: Ken Russell, written by Paddy Chayefsky …This is one of Ken Russell's best films. A scientist drinks an hallucinogenic potion seeking to expand his consciousness and instead turns into an ape-like creature. Amazing psychedelic effects. The extraordinary music written by John Corigliano who was nominated for an Academy Award is one of the high points. The stunning psychedelic visuals are extremely well done. This is a wild, original movie unlike any other. Shown on a good 35mm print.

FEB. 14th – SUNDAY:
(“POSTER SALE and THE GREATEST MEANEST HITS OF FILM NOIR”)
12.00 - POSTER SALE starts in the cinema café/ ends at 20.30 (free admission). Posters from Huset’s dusty backrooms will be sold cheap and more choice and collectable original movie posters, stills & related paraphernalia will be on sale by Anders of the shop CURIOUS who will be cutting the price on everything by 20%. He will have on display various horror, cult, sexploitation/porn classics and oddities. To mention a few: 'Hvorfor gør de det?', 'Ormenes nat'('Squirm'), 'Sex og Synd i Storbyen'('London in the Raw'). The selection of original movie stills include 'Star Wars', Russ Meyer's 'Vixen', 'Deep Throat' plus various Hitchcock titles and much more.
13.00 – FILM NOIR MARATHON starts in the cinema (50kr all day) & free coffee all day (and if you are in the spirit of things you’ll drink it black).
Cinema schedule:
“TASTE OF EVIL: GREATEST MEANEST HITS OF FILM NOIR”
Husets Bio presents a collection of some of the greatest film noir movies ever made. These films feature the vivid night-time photography and dramatic jazz scores that characterize the genre, and are populated with cynical characters driven over the edge by lust, greed and paranoia. They represent the dark side of post-war American and are full of attitude – all of it bad.
13.00 – UNDERWORLD USA, 1961, Directed by Sam Fuller. A man witnesses the murder of his father by the mob and seeks out each of its members and takes brutal revenge. A powerful exposé of the hidden world of crime and the evil that lurks under the surface of average American society.
15.00 – BRAINSTORM, 1965, Directed by William Conrad. A young computer genius falls in love with the wife of the president of the company where he works and plans to murder him, pretending to be insane, but something goes terribly wrong. Featuring Anne Francis who starred in FORBIDDEN PLANET in 1956.
17.00 – DETOUR, 1945, Directed by Edgar G. Ulmer. A New York jazz musician misses his girlfriend who has moved to Hollywood to make it make big, and he decides to hitch-hike across the country to see her, and yet through no fault of his own he ends up responsible for the murder of 2 people. One of the darkest most doom-haunted films ever made, a true “road movie.”
18.30 – D.O.A. 1950, Directed by Rudolph Maté. A man is told he has been poisoned and has just hours to live, setting him off on a frantic search to find out who is trying to kill him – and why. A fast-moving and stylish masterpiece.
20.30 – UNDERWORLD USA (repeat screening)

Its violent… it’s sexy… it’s WHITE TRASH!

THE CONCEPT:
American exploitation cinema is full of exaggerated archetypes that consist of a drop of truth and a bucket of tawdry fantasy, but no pop-culture stereotype is as trendy today as “white trash,” and the term has even gained fairly widespread circulation in Danish. Hollywood movies like “Baby Doll” and “Deliverance” introduced mainstream movie-goers to the concept decades ago but the true home of this dangerous breed of violent muscle-bound men and lusting well-built women is exploitation cinema, and Husets Bio takes pride in presenting 3 classics of White Trash Cinema from this action-packed genre.

THE FILMS:
SOUTHERN COMFORT was director Walter Hill’s 1981 follow up to The Warriors of 2 years prior which was a tale of gang warfare set on the mean streets of NYC. Hill chose a very different setting indeed for Southern Comfort, which unspools as a beastly revenge drama set in the deepest swamps of Louisiana Cajun country. MUDHONEY was directed by Russ Meyer in ’65 and with this tale of out-of-control lust, boozing, violence and religious dementia in the back woods of Missouri he painted a picture of degenerate hillbilly life that neatly encapsulates what “White Trash” is all about. The Jerry Baerwitz-directed WILD HARVEST from ’62 is a stylized exploitation melodrama about the pitiful plight of America’s migrant farm workers. It tells the story of beautiful women grape-pickers forced to sweat under a hot California sun for a cruel field boss who exploits them in all possible ways …until they take a horrible revenge!

TICKET PRICES: 50kr per night (for all films)

Friday: 26.02
19.00 = WILD HARVEST
21.00 = MUDHONEY
23.00 = SOUTHERN COMFORT
Saturday: 27.02

Asiatiske robotter invaderer Husets Biograf!

Friday, 05.03
19.00 = THE SUPER INFRAMAN
21.00 = ROBOTRIX
Saturday, 06.03
19.00 = ROBOT CARNIVAL
21.00 = INFRAMAN (repreat)

Tickets are 50kr. per night (includes both films)

The Super Inframan (Hua Shan, 1975)
35mm - engelsk tale/uden undertekster.

Robotrix (Jamie Luk, 1991)
35mm - kinesisk tale/engelske undertekster.

Robot Carnival (diverse, 1987)

Dear Film-goers,

On the 9th & 10th I'll have advance copies of my new book SCANDINAVIAN BLUE on sale, the book that was covered in (and on the cover of) the Politiken film guide Thursday. It is not on sale anywhere else in Denmark, for what that's worth.

2010 Edition of Huset i Magstræde open-air movie nights: 5.08 to 12.08
Huset i Magstræde celebrates the 5th year of its open-air summer film series from August 5th to 12. Expanding from 8 to 10 films this year and staying with our time-tested themes of sci-fi, cult and horror, we offer up a Hammer horror classic, a couple of films based on stories by H.G. Wells and our old favorite, JOURNEY TO THE 7th PLANET, a 60’s sci-fi oddity filmed in Denmark with a largely Danish cast (see below). Last year’s most popular film, FLASH GORDON, is also back for another turn and Jess Franco’s VENUS IN FURS supplies just the right touch of euro-trash erotica. We’ve got it all this year: Tura Satana kicking ass, Peter Cushing playing a mad scientist, erotic psychedelia, giant killer rats and weird shit happening in outer-space. So come on down and help us celebrate our 5th anniversary of drive-in style cinema under the stars – everything shown on old-school 16mm.

(Note: All shows except Friday & Saturday (6th & 7th) are intended to be held outside in the courtyard. Shows will definitely be held inside in the café on the 6th and 7th and on any other night when weather prevents screening outdoors. Admission is free, all feature films are English-language versions.)

05.08 – Thursday
21:45 – Short film followed by JOURNEY TO THE 7TH PLANET, 1962/ A host of Danish stars such as Ove Sprogøe, Carl Ottosen, Louis Miehe Renaud, Gretta Thyssen, Mimi Heinrich and Annie Birgit Garde feature in this bizarre but entrancing science fiction oddity about a giant monster brain that dwells beneath the surface of the planet Uranus and causes MUCH trouble..

06.08 – Friday (double-feature inside in Husets cafe)
19:00 – Bennys Badekar, Danish animated classic from 1970 (no subtitles)
20:00 - Feature Film: QUEEN OF OUTERSPACE, 1958 / A rocket-ship crash lands on Venus and the male crew is imprisoned by the women who inhabit the planet, led by evil queen Laurie Mitchell. A camp classic of 50’s design, costuming and sexual attitudes.
22:00 – Feature film: X:THE MAN WITH THE X-RAY EYES, 1963 / Ray Milland develops super human powers of vision that allow him to see women without any clothes on but also proves to be a fiendish curse! One of Roger Corman’s most ambitious and fully realized films.

07.08 – Saturday (double-feature inside)
19:00 – Lonely Boy, 1962 documentary about teen idol Paul Anka probes the outer limits of teenage groupie hysteria and is credited for being the first modern rock documentary.
19:30 – FRANKENSTEIN & THE MONSTER FROM HELL, 1974 / This Terence Fisher-directed Hammer production stars Peter Cushing as the resident mad doctor of an insane asylum who creates a monster out of human body parts.
22:00 - VENUS IN FURS, 1970 / Based on (or at least named after) the famous novella by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, this Jess Franco classic stars Klaus Kinski, James Darren, Barbara McNair and Maria Rohm and provides decadent atmosphere and warped psychology in excess..

08.08 – Sunday
21:45 – short film followed by: WILD ANGELS, 1966 / Some of the 60s coolest pop-cult luminaries star in Roger Corman’s landmark drama about a band of outlaw bikers. (Peter Fonda, Nancy Sinatra, Bruce Dern, Diana Ladd, Michael J. Pollard, Dick Miller and more.) The precursor to EASY RIDER, made 3 years before.

9.08 – Monday
21:45 – short film followed by FOOD OF THE GODS, 1976 / On an island off Seattle animals grow to giant size after drinking a toxic growth-hormone invented by a greedy scientist. Giant chickens, wasps and rats terrorize, gore and eat a band of human survivors who savagely fight back. Based on an H.G. Wells story and delivering a clear environmentalist message.

10.08 – Tuesday
21:45 – Short Film followed by VILLAGE OF THE GIANTS, 1965 / Ron Howard, then a child star, appears in this rock-scored fantasy about a gang of teenagers who grow to giant size and terrorize a small town. But the good teens triumph in the end. Like FOOD OF THE GODS it is based on an H.G. Wells story. Features a classic 60s soundtrack.

11.08 – Wednesday
21:45 – Short film followed by THE DOLL SQUAD, 1973 / Tura Satana leads a squad of female secret agents in a dangerous mission to attack the island fortress of a criminal mastermind set on destroying the world. Director T.V. Mikels gives us a low-budget James Bond-meets-blaxploitation soundtrack and girls in mini-shirts judo-chopping hell out of a cast of hopeless goons.

12.08 – Thursday
21:45 – Short film followed by FLASH GORDON, 1980 / The last true cult film returns with a host of truly evil characters including Ornella Muti as evil princess Aura and Max von Sydow as the merciless Ming. Evil never felt so good. With an unforgettable soundtrack by Queen.

We are planning ambitious programs all of the 5 weekends in October so we could use help in these areas: If there are any graphic designers out there who can make POSTERS, we need posters for our program on October 15-17: CINEMATRONIC: A FUSION FESTIVAL OF ELECTRONIC MUSIC & MOTION PICTURES, and for the following weekend: WILD FOR KICKS: BEATNIKS IN FACT & FICTION (October 22 to 24). We just need them designed - we can print them ourselves in Huset. Additionally we want to explore creating old-school psychedelic lightshows for parties that are connected to our screenings using dias, overhead and 16mm projectors. We have all this equipment, so If anyone is interested in learning the lost art of the light show, please contact me. So if you can design posters or want to learn the lightshow please respond by answering this mail. And as usual please bounce our programs to people who might be interested since we have no advertising budget.

Thanks, Jack
